About the YLC The Military Order of the World Wars Youth Leadership Conferences provide students with an unique opportunity to participate in a leadership development seminar taught by leaders from the government, industry, military and the academic communities. The YLC are educational conferences that give U.S. High School students the opportunity to develop leadership skills via patriotic education. Participants, who attend public, charter and private high schools or who are home-schooled may attend the San Diego YLC offered during the summer. This conference is designed to foster participants to develop leadership capabilities and then encourage them to utilize their new skills to make their communities a better place.
YLC attendees receive patriotic education, including elements of leadership needed to maintain a free society, concepts of a free enterprise system, and the foundational principles upon which the United States were built. Attendees develop an appreciation for the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and an awareness of the civic responsibilities associated with preserving rights and freedom. The primary goals of the Youth Leadership Conference are:
The Youth Leadership Conference is for students in current grades 9, 10 and 11 and is part of a national education outreach program sponsored by The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) and National Sojourners. The youth leadership and American Studies curriculum for the San Diego Youth Leadership Conference has been designed to achieve the same educational objectives as the MOWW Freedom Foundation, located at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. All secondary school conferences are approved for listing by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) on their National Advisory List of Contents and Activities.
Classes are participatory and present leadership principles and examples, and provide opportunities for YLC attendees to demonstrate their own leadership. The Curriculum as a goal generally devotes 50% of class time to leadership, 30% of curriculum devoted to US history and US government, and 20% of class time is devoted to the Free Enterprise System and the US economy.
The Phoenician Award, MOWW national YLC student essay award, is given annually for the best essay of all the Outstanding Students from all YLCs. The student receiving the first prize Phoenician Award receives $2000 during the National MOWW Convention. The second and third prize Phoenician Award winners are presented with $1000 and $500 respectively by the local YLC on behalf of the National MOWW organization. |
